Best Small Towns To Retire In Florida On a Monthly Budget Of $2,500
For this study, we identified the best small towns to retire in Florida, retirement cities with a monthly income of $2,500 or less. The 30 cheapest cities in Florida in terms of (1) average monthly rent for a one-bedroom apartment were identified using data from ApartmentList. The cost-of-living index for each city on the list was then determined using Sperling’s Best Places by looking at (2) grocery, (3) utility, and (4) healthcare index scores.
Then, we determined the annual expenditure amount for both grocery (or “food at home”) and healthcare costs for people 65 and older using information from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ 2020 Consumer Expenditure Survey in order to determine how much a person in that age group would spend on groceries and healthcare in each city on a monthly basis. We then calculated the amount that a person 65 years of age or older might survive on each month by adding up the costs of housing, food, and healthcare.
A community needed to have a livability score of 65 or above, as determined by AreaVibes, and a population of 10% or more people over the age of 65, as determined by the 2020 American Community Survey conducted by the Census Bureau. With the lowest score being the best, all eligible cities were rated according to (5) total monthly expenses, (6) percentage of residents over 65, and (7) livability for the final rankings. The weight for factor (7) was 1.5x. Which cities in the Sunshine State should you consider if you’re getting near to retirement age? Try these first ten best small towns to retire in Florida.
